MEANWHILE… BACK AT THE RANCH

You all know the saying… “When the cat’s away, the mice will play.”  Have you ever wondered what happens when the farmer or rancher goes into town?

I drew this cartoon for the owners of a Wine bar and Bistro.  I had been shown a similar drawing with a Bull in the tub but, to me, it didn’t fit.  What self-respecting bull would take a bubble bath?  It appears the cow has romantic ideas with the scattered petals on the floor and lit candles.  She even has a extra wine glass to work her plan.  You fill in the blanks…

I imagine the rest of the animals took advantage of the situation, too.  After a hard day of farming, why shouldn’t the animals unwind in the hot tub?  Kick back and toast the good life with a glass of fine wine.

Now, I’m going to leave it up to  your imagination as to what the farmer found upon his return home… Needless to say,  College kids are amateurs compared to these characters.  These are REAL PARTY ANIMALS!

BLENDING WESTERN AND CHINESE MEDICINE

You hear a lot these days about blending Western medicine with age old Chinese medicine.  I met a person practicing Acupuncture recently.  What he said about his practice made sense.  Shortly after that, I saw an episode on The Doctors where they demonstrated it.  That started me thinking… a dangerous undertaking to be sure.

With Western medicine so enamored with the pharmaceutical approach, ie, “There’s a pill for that!”, how would the blending of the two disciplines look?  I then realized Western medicine is really not about pills… it’s about DRUGS!  When I had that break-through in thinking, I knew how they could blend the two in a logical way.  So, I drew it.

This is where the Doctor says, “You might experience a little momentary discomfort… like a pin prick.”  Easy for them to say!  I can hardly wait for the disclosure sheet about the possible side effects…

RICH’S NEW HEARING AID

I took a self-publishing class a few years ago in Holt, Michigan.  The instructor, Rich Baldwin, found out I was a cartoonist and asked me to draw some cartoons for a website he had at the time.  Rich, like me, is hearing impaired and wears hearing aids.  Some of the cartoons were about misunderstandings caused by the “close, but no cigar” world of the hearing impaired.  If you live with a hearing impaired person, you know what I mean.

I drew this cartoon for him after his comment about people that start speaking very loudly when they see you are wearing hearing aids… regardless of the fact your hearing might be completely normal with the hearing aids.

Rich is a wonderful author and even a better person.  On his website, “Jocosity Cartoons” (no longer active), he had three categories of cartoons: Hearing impaired jokes, Catholic jokes and a Miscellaneous section for cartoons that didn’t fit in the first two categories.  Since Rich is very active in the Catholic Church and also an advocate for the hearing impaired, he had lots of ideas… good ones.  A lot of the cartoon ideas he got were from the same place I get my ideas… REAL LIFE.  I was lucky enough to get the pleasure of drawing his ideas.  I hope, with his permission, to showcase some of them in future blogs.  Knowing the story behind the cartoon is sometimes better than the cartoon itself… and, believe me, there are stories!

Check out his website and buy one (or, more) of his books.  He’s a great writer and if you get the chance to meet him in person, you’ll see why he’s one of my favorite people.  Judging by his new website, he’s going to add Children’s books to the long list of books he’s written.  Knowing him, they’ll be great!…  Hmmmm…  Wonder if he needs any cartoons for those books?

BODY BINGO… CHECK IT OUT!

So, what does the cover of “Discover the MAGIC of Rainbows” and the “CAST” of the book have to do with “BODY BINGO“?

After a blog entry, through the magic of  Twitter, I got notified I was being “watched” by Diane Cantwell, the originator of BODY BINGO.  As I usually do when being watched, I checked out her information to see just who this person was who was watching me… I knew by her name she wasn’t Big Brother.  Other than that, I knew nothing about her.

Much to my delight, she seemed to be a kindred spirit… a person motivated (You MUST read her story!) to make a difference in the lives of children by promoting a wonderful program called “BODY BINGO”.  BODY BINGO is designed to encourage kids to exercise and eat a healthy diet.  She wants to tackle Childhood Obesity head-on.

I wrote “Discover the MAGIC of Rainbows” to help parents with the important task of teaching kids to eat a rainbow diet of fruit and vegetables.    Body Bingo does that AND adds the other key component to good health… Exercise!  Check it out… BODY BINGO is an awesome program!…Then, use the MAGIC of the internet…TWEET your friends about it.

A CUTE CARE HOSPITAL… REALLY?

We all know it… “Cute=special attention.”  Puppies know it, kittens know it and babies figure it out at an early age.

I was listening to a radio ad about a local hospital and the announcer hesitated just an instant when he read the script and what I heard was: ” A Cute-Care Hospital”.  Looking back, I’m sure what he meant or even did say was: “An Acute Care Hospital”. But it was too late.  I heard what I heard and you can’t make me give it back.

Now that it is out in the open, I felt compelled to draw what I thought the hospital Admitting Room would look like in a Cute-Care Hospital.  Let’s face it.  How many times do you have to be upstaged by something or someone cute before  you acknowledge there is a double standard.  But, a whole hospital catering to cute people?!!  Give me a break….

Puppies and kittens?  Now, there’s a different story.
