Dick Evans spent over 35 years trapped in the Insurance industry working for State Farm Insurance. During his career he worked as a Field Auto Bodily Injury Adjuster, a Fire & Casualty Personal Lines Underwriter and for the final 25+ years as a State Farm Agent in the Traverse City, Michigan area.
To keep his sanity in what he often viewed as an insane business, he turned to his lifelong love of cartoons. He developed a cartoon class called “Cartoon FUNdamentals” and has taught it off and on for over 35 years. During his insurance career, he drew many cartoons about his perspective of what was transpiring… not always accepted with enthusiasm by management.
Dick believes strongly that without a good Sense of Humor to filter “real” life, we are likely to ignore what is really happening. He found over the years that he could draw a cartoon about something no one wanted to discuss openly for fear of retribution, only to find out they would be more than willing to discuss openly the merits of a cartoon about the same issue.
Dick’s cartoons are the equivalent of a picture album of the events that shaped his life. This blog is his attempt to bring insight into how cartoonists think and the creative process behind the finished product. Its focus will not be on State Farm, although he might comment on cartoons drawn during his time there. He continues to be insured with State Farm which says a lot about how he feels about the company.
